Exchange of genotypes with Lactanet

Background

Historically, genotypes were shared with Lactanet as part of the data exchange with Canada. As part of a process to offer genomic data providers and CDCB comprehensive data control, the rules/policies surrounding which genotypes are shared with Lactanet were reviewed with changes implemented on September 2nd, 2024. As of this date, a new genotype entering the CDCB database must have a recipient code “L” submitted on their nomination for the genotype to be shared with Lactanet. Not including genotype recipient code “L” on the nomination will prevent the animal from receiving a Canadian evaluation (LPI) from Lactanet

The recipient code has been added to the Format 1G in position 138 (historically a field used for Parentage Verification, which was made obsolete by the fee code changes of 2019). Valid values for this field in nominations can be found here. WebConnect also supports adding a recipient code in individual and bulk nomination tools.

All genotypes that were historically shared with Lactanet have a default recipient code of “L”. Additionally, genotypes for bulls controlled by a CDDR participant or partner with a paid fee of P are also shared.

Role of Nominators

Nominators are responsible for the "genotype recipient code" and any misuse of the data resulting from its improper or negligent use. When a genotype is transferred to a new Nominator, the recipient code should be reviewed and updated. Genomic Nominators should collect the following information at time of nomination:
  • Ask the animal controller/owner if they would like the genotype to be shared with Lactanet, or if they would like a Canadian evaluation (LPI) generated for the animal.
  • If the answer is “No”, the animal can be nominated with a blank recipient code on WebConnect, or in position 138 of a 1G file
  • If the answer is “Yes”, the animal can be nominated with an “L” recipient code on WebConnect, or in position 138 of a 1G file

If a genotype recipient code “L” should be removed from a genotype, a genotype recipient code “D” should be submitted to delete all of the associated recipient codes for a nomination. Instructions are also available in Updating the Recipient Code of Nominations documentation.

Timelines of Lactanet Sharing

Genotypes are shared with Lactanet on a Weekly and Monthly basis. The deadline for Weekly sharing is on Sunday at 6PM EST and the deadline for Monthly sharing is the Sunday at 6PM after the genomic deadline for the month, indicated on the CDCB evaluation calendar (ex. 2024): https://uscdcb.com/genetic-evaluation-schedule/2024/

Weekly sharing
It is based on the Loading Date of the genotype, NOT the Use Weekly Timestamp. The Sunday at 6PM EST following the loading of the genotype, the genotype will be shared with Lactanet if the animal’s nomination has an “L” on that Sunday. For animals with pre-existing genotypes in the system (pre-existing genotypes being defined as genotypes that have been in the system for more than a week), adding a recipient code “L” to the nomination will also trigger the genotype to be shared in the next Weekly share based on the entry timestamp of that recipient code.

Monthy sharing
It includes all new genotypes with a genotype recipient code “L” or any genotypes with a genotype recipient code “L” that have had an update to their genotype related information (e.g. ID, usability, requester) since the previous month.
