- Bulls with Net Merit below that of lowest active AI bull have percentile of --.
- Blank for bulls not evaluated.
- Percentile for cows based on distribution of NM$ for registered cows evaluated that pass first stage of screening for breed (eligible cows).
Ref.41¶
If the number of daughters = 0 or blank, the bull has less than 10 daughters available. Please check the field "Genomic Indicator Code" (GIC) to evaluate if the animal received a genomic evaluation.
Note: since April 2018, based on an all-industry decision, CDCB does not report daughters < 10 for male animals. The term proven bull has been used historically when progeny testing was the state-of-the-art method to predict the genetic merit of an animal. With the introduction of genomics, a combination of genomic and phenotypic data is used to predict genetic merit. Any phenotypic data available is used in the evaluation and there is no longer a threshold to attest the reliability of the PTA. However, for markets that haven't fully adopted the genomic concepts, CDCB recommendation is to consider bulls with more than 10 daughters as proven equivalent.

Somatic cell score = log base 2 (SCC/100,000)+3.
Where SCC is cells per milliliter. Report linear scores of < 0.1 as 0.1. blank indicates a missing value.
Ref.76¶
Compute percentage cow-days 3X as:
[(cow-days 3X)/(cow-days on test)]*100.
If actual number of cow-days 3X is unknown, use all days for which production is computed from 3X sample day as number of cow-days 3X.
Ref.77¶
Compute percentage days open as:
(cow-days open)/(cow-days on test)
This information may be difficult to accumulate because of repeated breedings. Computing values at the end of year instead of interval by interval may be easier. May report percentage of cows not pregnant on last sample day.
Ref.78¶
Average age at calving for all animals on test on test day.
Ref.81¶
Number of test days in this lactation not including estimated tests. This count includes tests in previous herds.
Ref.82¶
Alternative somatic cell scores | |
Code | Description |
---|---|
0 | No somatic cell scores. |
1 | Simple lactation average of unadjusted somatic cell scores. Only scores for first 305 days in milk would be included in average. |
2 | Weighted lactation average of somatic cell scores. Weights would be those of Wiggans and Shook (JDS 70:2666, 1987). Scores would not be adjusted for stage or season. Positions 135-137 would contain the sum of the weights (reported as X.XX) instead of the number of tests as in code 1. |
3 | Weighted lactation average of adjusted somatic cell scores. Scores would be weighted after being adjusted for stage of lactation and season of test. Positions 135-137 would contain the sum of the weights (reported as X.XX) instead of the number of tests as in code 1. |

Format-38 files are distributed by CDCB before active status is determined based on new evaluations. All bulls with active status at the beginning of a triannual run are assigned inactive status.
Ref.95¶
Formats 105 and 38 are modified to adapt them for reporting goat evaluations. Most fields for fat and protein are multiplied by 10 for increased precision. Some data are not provided.
Largest differences are as follows (not a complete list):
Format 105 | Format 38 | |
---|---|---|
Fields always blank for goats | - Changes in cow's information - Changes in cow's ancestor information - Cross Reference ID - All fields reporting daughter pregnancy rate (DPR), productive life (PL), and somatic cell score (SCS) |
- Cross Reference ID - Short AI name - Sampling status - Current status - Date bull entered AI - NAAB bull controller number - Number of NAAB codes - NAAB codes - All fields reporting daughter pregnancy rate (DPR), productive life (PL), somatic cell score (SCS), and sire conception rate (SCR) - Recessive codes |
Fields multiplied by 10 (i.e., +/-XX.X instead of +/-XXX) |
- PA fat - Yield deviation (YD) fat - Predicted producing ability (PPA) fat - PTA fat - PA protein - YD protein - PPA protein - PTA protein |
- Daughter yield deviation (DYD) fat - PA fat - PTA fat - DYD protein - PA protein - PTA protein |
Fields with special meanings | - PPA not guaranteed to be from the current herd. For a doe with records in more than one herd, a PPA is predicted for each herd. The one from the herd with the lowest herd code is reported. - Percentile present only for does born during 10 years preceding the run and is based on those does. - Elite designation present for top 5% of does with percentiles, kidding date in the past 2 years, and last termination code indicating the doe still was alive. |
- Percentile present only for bucks with daughters born during the 3 years preceding the year of the run and is based on those bucks |
Ref.96¶
These fields have been added to Format4 to facilitate data sharing among the dairy industry various cooperating organizations.
These fields are not to be used when transmitting data between Dairy Record Processing Centers and CDCB.

Ref.116¶
Ship% - Last test-day percentage of milk shipped.Calculated as:
- [(herd test-day milk yield/(milk shipped)]*100 (rounded to one decimal place)
- herd test-day milk yield = sum of test-day milk yields for all cows in herd
- milk shipped = bulk tank milk weight adjusted to a daily basis
(NCDHIP Rules, Appendix 2, state that the bulk tank weight shall be estimated by bulk tank pickup weights for three shipments immediately prior to the test date).
Ref.117¶
Information on codes is available at the National DHIA/QCS website
Ref.118¶
Quality certification (QC) status - The primary use for this field is to indicate device certification. Failure to meet other aspects of QC should also be indicated by assigning a value of 2.
Quality certification (QC) status | ||
Code | Description | Which data is accepted |
---|---|---|
1 | Meters are certified and all other aspects of field service meet QC (qualify for genetic evaluation) | All data is accepted (Breeding/health events, yield, components) |
2 | Meters are certified but some other aspect of field service does not meet QC | Breeding/health events and yield data are accepted. Components results are not accepted |
3 | Meters are not certified even though all other aspects of field service meet QC | Breeding/health events are accepted |
4 | Neither meter certification nor remaining aspects of field service meet QC | No data is accepted |
Codes different than 1, 2, 3 or 4 will result in the rejection of the record.

Source Codes | ||
Code | Description | Valid uses |
---|---|---|
B | Breed Associations (USA and CAN) and CDDR exchange partners (bulls only) | Format 1 (pedigree data) |
N/R/I | NAAB, any nominator (except breed associations), Interbull and International pedigree without regular pedigree update |
Format 1 (pedigree data) |
D | Dairy Records Processing Center (DRPC) | Format 4 (lactation data) Format 4 (male pedigree data - creates format1 w/source 'R') Format 5 (reproductive data) Format 6 (health data) |
H | Pedigree provided in a health record from a National Association of Animal Breeders (NAAB) source |
Format 6 (health data) |
C | CDCB internal use only | Format 4 (calving ease lactation data) Format 4 (male pedigree data - creates format1 w/source 'E') |
A | CDCB | Format 1 (pedigree data) |
- Record source code indicates the data provider (source). If a record needs correction, the organization related to the record source has the responsibility to do so.
- Generally the list above can be considered as a priority gradient, which means that the organization at the top have higher priority (so they can make corrections to records overwriting lower priority source coded). However, some exceptions apply.
- Source code "A" is usually generated automatically by CDCB systems to reference animal IDs that are not known and for which pedigree information is not provided. However, this source can be assigned to a known animal in the system when a pedigree change is forced by CDCB systems. The lowest priority of this source code allows modification to anyone interacting with the cooperator database.

Ref.127¶
This field should represent values as of last sample date.
Ref.128¶
This field should represent an average over the previous 365 days. It is the total yearly trait total for the herd divided by the total cow-days for the year times 365. The trait value and cow days are accumulated by test intervals. For the oldest test interval which spans the 365 day period, the trait value portion which accumulates exactly 365 days is used. No adjustments are made for age, stage of lactation, number of dry cows, or length of the dry period. Best prediction is not used.
Ref.129¶
This field should represent totals for a 365 day period ending on last test day.

Brown Swiss Cattle Breeders Association | |
Registry status | Definition |
---|---|
blank | Grade animal, or registry status unknown. |
RF | Initial grade up animal. Only females are eligible for this program. One parent must be a registered Brown Swiss and the second parent can be any dairy animal. Thus, these may be crossbred animals but will be at least 50% Brown Swiss. Please note that not all animals must start with this step, as characteristic grade Brown Swiss may go directly into the ID step. |
ID | Will be the next step which may be either (a) an offspring (IDR) of a RF dam and a registered Brown Swiss sire or may be (b) an identified and inspected grade Brown Swiss (ID) (original animal) possessing typical Brown Swiss color and characteristics. These females (b) would have either unknown Brown Swiss parents or may have one registered parent. Only females are eligible for this program step. |
IE | Will be the next step which will always have an ID or IDR dam and a registered Brown Swiss sire. Again only females are eligible for this step. |
HR | Will be for fully registered animals. The dam may be either an IE or HR registry status animal. If the dam is an IE, only female offspring may be registered and they will carry a CIE prefix. The sire will always be HR status and Brown Swiss. |
NOTE: All registration levels now use the same registration numbering system. Animals assinged numbers by Brown Swiss have an eight digit American ID number beginning with 68xxxxxx. Other official AIN numbering series assigned to other breeds as well as the 840 RFID numbers are acceptable. |

Ref.149¶
A pedigree is considered 100% complete if all paths trace back to an ancestor born at least 30 years before the current calendar year (eg. 1990 in 2020), or if the animal itself is born before that year. The choice of 30 years results in a completeness of 100% for most registered animals born in recent years. Pedigree completeness is 0% if both parents are unknown, and 50% if one parent is unknown and the other has a complete pedigree. This definition of pedigree completeness is similar to the percentage of registered Holstein ancestry (RHA) calculated by Holstein USA, except that all ancestors contribute instead of just registered ancestors. Cassell et al (2003 J. Dairy Sci. 86:2967) defined a similar measure. Breeders can use this field to monitor record-keeping at the herd level and compare the completeness of pedigree files available locally to those available nationally or internationally.

Ref.351¶
Reliabilities are always released as a positive integer value.
Ref.352¶
Parent averages are genomic parent averages (GPA) for all traits except TYPE and CALVING traits. Traditional parent average is reported if the reliability of traditional PTA is higher or equal to the genomic PTA reliability (as is the case for highly-reliable animals).
Note the genomic PA reported in this field for NM$ will report a combination of genomic PA and traditional PAs, so it might not reflect the expected (DAM GPTA + SIRE GPTA)/2 value.

Lactation Mask Code - Mask shown may be any combination of these values:
Lactation Masks | |
Code | Meaning |
80 | record coded incomplete |
40 | record is coded with previous days dry |
20 | protein lactation information not useable |
10 | crossbred animal |
08 | lactation not useable |
04 | somatic cell available |
02 | milk-only record (for calvings after 1997-01-01) no management group mates (for calvings before 1997-01-01) |
01 | internal use by CDCB |
Mask codes are interpreted by reading each digit segment individually.
The number or letter in the first digit of the code refers to a possible combination of codes 10 through 80. The number or letter in the second digit of the code refers to a possible combination of codes 01 through 08. When there is a combination of codes, the code numbers are added together (i.e. codes 04 and 02 would be written as 06). When the code combination added together is greater than 9, alphabetic letters are used (i.e. a = 10, b = 11, ..., f = 15).
Possible combinations of codes:
1 = code 1
2 = code 2
3 = code 2 and 1
4 = code 4
5 = code 4 and 1
6 = code 4 and 2
7 = code 4 and 2 and 1
8 = code 8
9 = code 8 and 1
a = code 8 and 2
b = code 8 and 2 and 1
c = code 8 and 4
d = code 8 and 4 and 1
e = code 8 and 4 and 2
f = code 8 and 4 and 2 and 1
Examples:
40 = code 40
82 = codes 80, 02
47 = codes 40, 04, 02, 01
6b = codes 40, 20, 08, 02, 01
